Baltic Ambassadors demarche Poland for Blockade of Ukrainian Border
Ambassadors from the Baltic countries in Warsaw expressed their dissatisfaction with the Polish authorities regarding the blockade of truck traffic on the Ukraine border, according to ERR.
As the agency notes, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this issue has been repeatedly raised in relations with Poland.
According to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Briti Kikas, a meeting/demarche of the three Baltic ambassadors took place in the Ministry of Infrastructure of Poland.
"We respect the right of truck drivers to protest. Unfortunately, this has led to a difficult situation, creating problems for other carriers and additional difficulties for the Ukrainian economy. On our part, we raise this issue with Poland and hope that a solution will be found soon in cooperation between Poland, Ukraine, and the European Commission," Kikas told the agency.
In diplomacy, a demarche means an appeal by one government to another government to draw attention to something, often with proposals to take specific measures.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Estonia will continue its efforts to find a solution with the new Polish government.
"Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna had a conversation with the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Johannes Rau. In addition, a visit of the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland to Tallinn is planned in the near future, where this issue will be discussed," Kikas said.
The representative of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the issue of the blockade of the Ukrainian border was also discussed at a meeting between Tsahkna and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, on Monday, December 4.
Border blockade
Since November 6, the movement of freight transport on the Ukrainian-Polish border has been complicated. As of December 5, the movement of trucks is limited at four checkpoints on the border with Poland.
The queues at the border were due to the strikes by Polish carriers. They demand a return to the permit system for our country.
RBC-Ukraine has previously visited the Ukrainian-Polish border, where queues of trucks have formed for more than 20 km. More details about this are in our material.
