Before the heat sets in, your air conditioner needs a thorough cleaning and a technical check. During its downtime, dust, dirt, and bacteria accumulate inside, which can be harmful both to the appliance and to your health. Here are a few simple tips to help your air conditioner run efficiently throughout the entire summer season.

Turn off the air conditioner in advance

Before starting any maintenance, be sure to unplug the air conditioner from the power supply. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes for the system to fully cool down. This helps prevent electric shock and damage to components. Only after that should you begin working with the indoor or outdoor unit.

Clean the indoor unit filters

Filters are the main barrier against dust, allergens, and bacteria in your home. They should be rinsed under running water and dried thoroughly before being reinstalled. If the filters are too dirty or damaged, it’s best to replace them. It’s recommended to clean the filters at least twice a year.

Wipe the louvers and indoor unit casing

Dust on the louvers can quickly spread around the room with the cooled air. That’s why you should wipe them with a damp cloth, along with the air conditioner’s casing. This also improves hygiene in your home, especially if there are children or allergy sufferers. Regular damp cleaning reduces the number of airborne microbes.

Check the outdoor unit for debris

The outdoor unit easily gets clogged with dust, leaves, and insects. Before cleaning, be sure to remove the casing panels using appropriate tools. Then inspect the condition of the fan and radiator – these are often the dirtiest parts. If the unit is mounted high up, it’s better to leave the work to professionals or industrial climbers.

Clean the fan and blades of the outdoor unit

Fan blades should be cleaned with a soft brush or cloth without bending or damaging them. If necessary, use specialized cleaning products, avoiding contact with metal components. After cleaning the fan, you may apply a drop of lubricant to improve performance. If possible, blow dust off the components with compressed air.

Check the drainage system and connections

A clogged drain can cause leaks and mold growth. Clean the drain pipe from any debris, or contact a technician if you’re unsure how to do it. Also, check the tightness of all connections and electrical contacts. If any issues are found, contact an authorized service center.

Get a full technical inspection

Even after cleaning it yourself, it’s recommended to schedule a service check by professionals. They will check the pressure, refrigerant levels, and the performance of the control board and other key components. Such a diagnosis can help avoid major breakdowns in the middle of summer. Choose a certified service center to avoid voiding your warranty.
