Russia used Kalibr missiles with cluster munitions against Ukraine: Expert explains their danger
During the massive attack on November 28, Russia used Kalibr cruise missiles with cluster munitions. Such missiles pose a double threat, as military expert and major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksii Hetman told RBC-Ukraine.
The height at which a missile is detonated determines the area affected by cluster munitions. The higher the altitude, the larger the damage area, but the lower the density.
Cluster submunitions used by Ukraine explode up to 96-97%, while those used by the Russians explode 50-50.
“Therefore, there is a double danger - the danger of covering a large area, and the danger of them exploding later. They are dangerous... A dog can run through, push them and they will explode,” explained Hetman.
The expert adds that cluster munitions are used where there are no armored fortifications.
Kalibr is a sea-launched cruise missile. Russia launches Kalibr missiles at Ukraine from the Black and Azov Seas. In the winter of 2022, the Russian troops often used these missiles during massive shelling.
According to the Air Force, today, November 28, Russians fired 28 Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukraine from the Black Sea. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Kalibr missiles were armed with cluster munitions.
Massive shelling of Ukraine
Today, Russia launched another massive attack on Ukraine, firing 91 missiles and 97 drones. The energy sector was under attack.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported 12 hits, mostly on fuel and energy facilities. Rescuers said that there was damage in 14 regions of Ukraine.
Infrastructure facilities were damaged in the Rivne, Lviv, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Volyn, Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, and Vinnytsia regions.
During the shelling, power companies introduced emergency blackouts. Emergency restrictions have been lifted, but rolling blackouts are still in effect.
