Expert outlines possible plan for Russia's attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants
Russian occupiers may be preparing attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The likely targets of the enemy will be substations, states Oleksandr Musiienko, Head of the Сenter of Military Law Researches, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine's YouTube channel.
The expert reminded that all countries have deemed attacks on nuclear power plants unacceptable. This issue has also been discussed on United Nations platforms.
At the same time, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the Russian forces are planning attacks on substations and distribution networks.
Musiienko pointed out that substations are essential for transporting and distributing the generated electricity.
"Russia wants to strike these substations, judging by what the foreign minister said, to create problems for nuclear power plants," he clarified.
However, according to the expert, an even greater threat is that the Russian forces could target substations that supply electricity to the nuclear plants themselves. This could disrupt the operation of cooling ponds and pumps, as was the case with the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
"All of this, according to the enemy's plan, is aimed at causing issues where, if electricity is generated but not transported, it cannot remain untransported indefinitely and essentially stay at its generation site. This could lead to the shutdown of power units, which is likely part of Russia's plan," Musiienko explained.
He noted that nuclear generation primarily meets Ukraine's energy needs.
What preceded this
On September 21, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry warned that the Russian forces were preparing attacks on Ukraine's nuclear energy facilities.
Following this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the enemy is using Chinese satellites to monitor nuclear energy facilities.
According to the president, Russia's plan includes attacks this fall, and Ukraine possesses relevant information about these intentions.
