On the southern front, signs of trench warfare are observed, but the advancement of Ukrainian forces continues, albeit with a relatively inactive front line near Robotyne.
Experts Vladyslav Seleznov and Oleksandr Kovalenko commented on this situation in the article by RBC-Ukraine titled "Avdiivka draining Russian resources: How Ukraine defends East and expands its foothold."
Currently, it is known that the front line near Robitne is relatively inactive. The situation indicates not only Ukrainian attacks but also successful Russian counterattacks on a tactical level.
"Unfortunately, we have to state not only Ukrainian attacks but also enemy counterattacks that are successful at the tactical level. Moreover, the battles here are taking place near the first Surovikin line (the line of defense of the occupiers, - ed.). Our gains are several kilometers in four months are quite modest. General Valerii Zaluzhnyi said in one of the interviews that the calculations were completely different," noted expert Vladyslav Seleznov.
Meanwhile, on the southern front, there are signs of trench warfare.
"I cannot yet say that our counteroffensive has come to an end, it's just that the format of hostilities is changing to a classic positional war. We are advancing, but very slowly," added Oleksandr Kovalenko.

Trends in transitioning to positional warfare
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, acknowledged inevitable miscalculations related to the counteroffensive in early November in an article and interview for The Economist. He also warned of the risks of positional warfare if Ukrainian forces do not have technological superiority over the enemy.
Recently, it became known that occupiers are strengthening the defense in the Tokmak region, conducting more checks, and increasing the number of checkpoints in the city.
