Bilateral security guarantees from the US under NATO's Article 5, as well as guarantees from European partners and other countries, already represent a compromise by Ukraine. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in comments to the media.

Zelenskyy noted that from the very beginning Ukraine’s desired option was NATO membership, which would have provided real security guarantees. However, this path was not supported by some partners in the US and Europe.

"Today, bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States — namely Article 5 guarantees from the US for us — along with security guarantees from our European colleagues and other countries, Canada, Japan, and others. These security guarantees are an opportunity for us to prevent another wave of Russian aggression. And this is already a compromise on our part," he stressed.

US ready to provide Ukraine with Article 5 guarantees

Earlier, media reports said that the administration of US President Donald Trump is ready to provide Ukraine with legally binding security guarantees based on NATO’s Article 5.

According to a US official, the relevant agreement would be submitted for a vote in the US Congress. He noted that Washington aims to offer Kyiv not a "blank check," but a strong and real security guarantee.

The negotiation process is expected to consist of three separate agreements — on peace, security guarantees, and postwar reconstruction. As the official said, the latest rounds of talks have, for the first time, given Ukraine a clear vision of the "day after the war."

The US also stated that negotiations on economic recovery and reconstruction are progressing positively. Under the current proposal, the war would end with Ukraine retaining sovereignty over about 80% of its territory, receiving the "strongest security guarantees in history," and a large-scale package of economic support.
