Zelenskyy tells how Ukraine will spend €35 billion from European Commission
The 35 billion euros ($39.05 billion) announced today, September 20, will primarily be spent on Ukraine's energy sector and defense. In particular, part of the funds would go to domestic arms production, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a joint briefing with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
“We will spend these 35 billion primarily on energy and defense. Also, on bomb shelters for children in schools, kindergartens, and universities. This is a big deficit for us,” the president said.
According to Zelenskyy, part of the funds will be spent on weapons, but primarily on domestic production. We are talking about missiles and drones, which are cheaper than those of our partners.
“But we are grateful to our partners for the high-quality weapons they are introducing. That is why we are ready to spend part of these funds primarily on air defense, which is not produced in our country,” Zelenskyy said.
What preceded it
During today's visit to Kyiv, Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Commission, as part of the G7 commitments, would provide Ukraine with a loan of 35 billion euros.
As the Financial Times reported earlier, the funds will be taken from the future profits from the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank.
