Zelenskyy speaks with Romania's newly elected leader and invites him to Ukraine

During a conversation with Romania's newly elected leader Nicușor Dan, an invitation to visit Ukraine was extended by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During the conversation, according to Zelenskyy, he congratulated Nicușor Dan on winning the presidential election.
"We respect Romania and the choice of the Romanian people. It is a country whose role in security matters is significant. We are deeply grateful for its contribution to protecting the lives of our people. It's important that Romania's support for Ukraine will continue. Romania understands how crucial the fight for freedom and justice is," the president wrote.
Zelenskyy noted that he had invited Nicușor Dan to visit Ukraine and discussed with him the nearest opportunities to meet in person.
Presidential elections in Romania
The presidential election in Romania initially took place in November 2024. In the first round, pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu emerged as the winner. However, the country's intelligence services later uncovered evidence of foreign interference in his campaign. As a result, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the vote.
A repeat first round was held in early May 2025. According to the results, far-right candidate George Simion received 40.96% of the vote, while pro-Western candidate Nicușor Dan secured 20.99%.
The second round took place on May 18. Dan won with over 54% of the vote, while Simion received 45.27%.
