Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian missiles and drones have been hitting Ukraine's thermal power plants and gas production sites. Speaking alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, he said today's gas deal with Greece will help offset the lost production.
"Russia is striking our infrastructure almost every night. Energy facilities take the heaviest hits. Most power plants in Ukraine, our gas production sites, and our thermal power stations have become targets for missiles, ballistic missiles, drones, Iranian drones, and North Korean missiles," the president said.
Zelenskyy said a large number of projectiles continue to hit Ukraine. He added that the country repairs its infrastructure after every attack, but the process requires time, effort, and equipment.
The Ukrainian president also addressed today's agreement with Greece on natural gas supplies, saying the deal will compensate for lost production and strengthen Ukraine's energy security this winter.
"As for gas, this requires gas imports. To compensate for Russia's destruction of our own production, our agreements with Greece today are an important part of the broader energy package we prepared for this winter to ensure Ukraine has gas," Zelenskyy said.
Gas deal and Russian strikes
Earlier today, Ukraine and Greece agreed to establish a new energy route that will deliver gas to Ukraine through a vertical corridor running from Alexandroupolis in Greece to Odesa. The supplies will transit via Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova.
Last week, on the night of November 8, Russia carried out another combined attack on Ukraine. The country's energy infrastructure was the main target, prompting stricter power outage schedules.
Ukraine's state energy company, PJSC Centerenergo, said it was the most extensive attack on thermal power plants since the start of the full-scale war. Russian drones and missiles hit the Zmiivska and Trypilska thermal plants, forcing both to halt operations and stop generating electricity.
During the night of November 11, Russian strikes hit energy facilities in Kharkiv, Odesa, and Donetsk regions. The enemy conducted additional attacks on infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions during the night of November 13.
