Politico reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Servant of the People party that he plans to participate in any elections held after the end of the war. However, in reality, the issue of elections was not discussed, according to Politico and RBC-Ukraine sources.

President Zelenskyy allegedly expressed his intention to run for a second term during a meeting with the Servant of the People party last week. Politico cited unnamed MPs who attended the meeting.

They spoke to Western media “on condition of anonymity for fear of inviting presidential wrath.”

At the same time, RBC-Ukraine sources who were also present at the meeting denied such rumors. According to them, the topic of Zelenskyy running in the next elections was not raised at all during the meeting.

Elections and war

Ukrainian law prohibits holding elections during martial law. Surveys show that most citizens also do not support the idea of elections during wartime.

During a press briefing on August 20, President Zelenskyy said that the election topic should not divide society during the war.

“I would be satisfied if the elections had already taken place. To finally put an end to this topic, because it gives nothing except quarrels and political slogans, posters, etc.,” the Ukrainian President said.

Earlier, Zelenskyy also emphasized that holding elections in Ukraine requires a comprehensive ceasefire - on the battlefield, in the air, and at sea.

In addition, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said that Ukraine is preparing for elections after martial law ends. According to Stefanchuk, they will be unique.
