The first round of trilateral talks in Geneva has concluded. The Ukrainian delegation plans to raise a key question with the US regarding compliance with agreements to refrain from strikes, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and National Security Secretary Rustem Umerov.
Ukraine is ready for agreements
President Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine confirms its readiness to halt strikes and move toward a peace agreement, but expects a clear position from Russia.
"The guys must raise the question about these strikes — primarily with the American side, which proposed restraint from attacks to both us and Russia. Ukraine is ready. We do not want war," Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is not interested in prolonging the war and takes mirror measures to defend its state and independence.
Zelenskyy added that the key question remains for Russia — whether it is ready for real diplomacy and peace, and whether there will be consequences for continuing missile and drone attacks.
Negotiations to continue tomorrow
National Security Secretary Rustem Umerov reported that the first day of talks ended after a joint session and work in separate groups by areas. Discussions were focused on practical mechanisms for possible solutions.
Both the political and military teams completed their work on the first day, and the Ukrainian delegation will prepare a report for the President.
"Today, the results of the first day of negotiations in Geneva will be reported to the President of Ukraine. Tomorrow morning, the political and military groups will continue their work," Umerov said.
Talks in Geneva
On February 17–18, the third round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia is taking place in Geneva under US mediation. The start of the meeting was announced by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, who is participating in the talks.
He also shared photos from the meeting and noted that the Ukrainian delegation is working constructively, with focus and without unnecessary expectations. Details of the discussions have not yet been disclosed.
The main result of the previous two rounds was a prisoner exchange, the first in five months. 157 Ukrainian defenders returned home.
One of the key disagreements between the sides remains territorial: Russia insists on full control over the Donetsk region, while Ukraine rejects territorial concessions and advocates for a ceasefire along the contact line.
Additionally, according to RBC-Ukraine, at Zelenskyy’s request, representatives from European countries joined the Geneva negotiations between Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
