Another blackout at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant caused by Russia’s aggression is proof that international institutions are weak and unable to act, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly.

The head of the Ukrainian state recalled that during his speech at last year’s General Assembly, he had warned about the risks of a radiation accident, particularly due to Russia’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia plant.

"But nothing’s changed. Nothing. And yesterday, the plant went into blackout again. And Russia hasn’t stopped shelling – even in areas near a nuclear facility. And because international institutions are too weak, this madness continues," Zelenskyy emphasized.

Blackout at Zaporizhzhia NPP

Yesterday, September 23, Energoatom reported that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant had suffered its tenth blackout since the start of the full-scale war.

The company clarified that the last external power line connecting the plant to Ukraine’s energy system was disconnected.

As a result, the Zaporizhzhia NPP switched to backup power from diesel generators.

Such a situation could lead to a nuclear accident, as an external power supply is essential for cooling the nuclear reactors.
