Zelenskyy on US election: I don’t know what the offer will be to us, we see three ways
Ukraine is uncertain about what the US will propose after the presidential election. Likely, there are three different paths ahead, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy acknowledged that the outcome of next month’s US presidential election will be decisive for Ukraine’s future and its ambitions to join NATO.
Vice President and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris said she would consider Ukraine's NATO membership in the future. On the other hand, former President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump has criticized US military aid and promised to resolve the conflict once elected.
"I don’t know what the offer will be to us after the [US] election. We can see three different ways forward," Zelenskyy said.
According to the president, one of the proposals is continued support, though allies still fear certain risks.
"We also see other paths. Will it be more positive? Or less positive? Frankly, I don’t know. And this is very sensitive for our people," the head of state added.
The US presidential election will take place in November. The main candidates at this point are Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.
Ukraine's NATO membership
In the fall of 2022, Ukraine submitted an application for accelerated NATO membership. However, NATO has said that Ukraine will not be able to join the Alliance until the war is over.
Recently, NATO’s new Secretary General Mark Rutte suggested that Ukraine could become the 33rd or 34th member of the Alliance.
As part of Ukraine's victory plan in the war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an invitation to join NATO. According to him, this could serve as a deterrent against Russia.
