On the night of January 1, Russia launched more than 200 strike drones at Ukrainian territory. Their target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“On New Year’s Day, Russia deliberately continues its war: more than 200 strike drones were launched against Ukraine last night. Most of them were shot down, and I thank all our warriors who repelled this attack,” the president said.

He noted that strikes were carried out in the Volyn, Rivne, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions.

“The targets are our energy facilities. Wherever needed, rescuers are assisting, and energy workers are restoring electricity after the strikes. I thank every man and woman involved in dealing with the consequences,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader stressed that the killings must be stopped and added that “there can be no pauses in protecting life.” He emphasized that if Russia does not stop striking even during New Year’s holidays, air defense supplies must not be delayed.

“Our partners have the necessary scarce equipment. We expect that everything agreed with America at the end of December for our defense will arrive on time,” the president said.

Strikes on Ukraine on New Year’s night

On the night of January 1, Russia attacked Ukraine using 205 strike drones. Air defense forces managed to shoot down most of the enemy UAVs. Hits by 24 strike drones were recorded at 15 locations.

In particular, Russian forces attacked the Volyn region throughout the night. As a result of the shelling, more than 103,000 consumers were left without electricity.

In addition, shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Russian forces again struck Zaporizhzhia, leaving five people injured, including a teenager.
