Zelenskyy names countries that oppose Ukraine's NATO membership
Currently, four countries, including the United States of America (USA), do not want Ukraine to join NATO for various reasons, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a briefing with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to Zelenskyy, the following countries currently do not want Ukraine to join NATO:
- The United States
- Hungary
- Slovakia
- Germany
"This is an open conversation. And it seems to me that there are no secrets here – these are the four countries that, for various reasons, have not yet seen Ukraine in NATO," he added.
Ukraine's NATO accession
In October 2024, President Zelenskyy stated that the majority of NATO countries support Ukraine's invitation to the Alliance, the first point of the Victory Plan. However, Germany remains skeptical about this issue, and it, in turn, looks to the United States. Specifically, Hungary and Slovakia oppose membership.
At the same time, Ukraine is not discussing the possibility of joining NATO in exchange for giving up the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.
As recently noted by Polish leader Andrzej Duda, an invitation for Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization could be the first step toward real security guarantees.
