Zelenskyy holds first talks with Canada's new prime minister on Ukraine peace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met for the first time with Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney. The two leaders discussed steps to bring peace closer.
Zelenskyy noted that he and Carney had a detailed discussion about sanctions that would work to pressure Moscow to end the war.
"I had a good meeting with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. I am grateful for Canada's support — we truly value having Canada as a real friend of Ukraine. We discussed what is needed to bring a lasting peace closer. The key priority is to apply pressure on Russia in a way that compels real steps toward ending the war. We spoke in detail about which sanctions can be effective, including secondary sanctions, energy-related measures, and sanctions against the shadow fleet," the statement said.
The president also added that they discussed defense cooperation and the development of a coalition of willing partners.
"I'm grateful for the invitation to take part in the upcoming G7 meeting. We look forward to welcoming the Prime Minister to Ukraine," Zelenskyy concluded.
Later, Zelenskyy shared a video of his meeting with Carney. In a Telegram post, Zelenskyy provided more information. He said he informed the Canadian Prime Minister about Russian missile and drone strikes on civilians. He emphasized that Ukraine needs to strengthen its air defense to protect lives.
"I spoke about the progress of negotiations in Istanbul and the importance of further coordinating our efforts. The next sanctions against Russia must be strong and cover the energy sector and the shadow fleet to push it to take real steps toward peace," the new post said.
As a reminder, on May 1, Mark Carney announced that he had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
After that, Carney stressed Ukraine's commitment to ending the Russia-Ukraine war. However, he added that Moscow does not show the same willingness.
