Canadian PM after talks with Zelenskyy: Ukraine demonstrates its commitment to peace

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and praised Kyiv's commitment to ending the Russia-Ukraine war. However, Moscow has shown no such willingness, according to a post by the Canadian Prime Minister on his Twitter (X) account.
In a social media post on May 1, Carney shared details about his conversation with the Ukrainian president following his victory in Canada’s snap parliamentary elections.
"Ukraine has shown its commitment to peace. Russia must come to the table in good faith," the Canadian Prime Minister emphasized.
He also added that he is looking forward to welcoming Ukrainian President Zelenskyy at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, later this summer.
"This war must end — and Canada will continue our efforts among allies to bring about freedom, peace, and security for Ukraine," Carney stated.
Zelenskyy-Carney talks
On the evening of April 30, President Zelenskyy congratulated Mark Carney on his victory in Canada's snap parliamentary elections. The head of state emphasized that Ukraine deeply values our close ties with Canada and the unwavering support of the Canadian people.
The president also expressed gratitude to Canada for its principled leadership in supporting Ukraine, including military, financial, and humanitarian aid, as well as for imposing sanctions on Russia in response to its aggression.
It was also reported that in mid-March, Zelenskyy discussed sanctions against Russia and assistance to Ukraine with Carney.
Earlier, Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose candidacy received the most support from members of the ruling Liberal Party on March 10, stated that the country supports the proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. He also noted that, in line with the G7 agreement, Canada will strengthen enforcement of sanctions against Russia to encourage compliance.
Moscow does not agree to a long-term ceasefire and proposes a truce
Moscow has yet to agree to the 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington and accepted by Kyiv as part of US efforts to end the war. Instead, the Kremlin continues to set various conditions and has recently been initiating so-called truces on the front lines.
However, the Russian side has never actually abided by such ceasefire regimes.
For instance, on April 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a truce in the war against Ukraine from May 8 to 11, allegedly for humanitarian reasons. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that only a full and unconditional ceasefire lasting at least 30 days could provide a basis for real diplomacy.
According to the White House, US President Donald Trump wants a lasting peace, not just a brief ceasefire.
As previously highlighted by the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), the Kremlin is afraid of attacks during its military parade and lacks faith in its air defense systems.
