Ukraine has made significant progress in establishing a foreign military contingent on its territory, which could be a first step toward creating a unified European Armed Forces, stated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"There is a real platform, not just paper agreements or talks. I believe we have made significant progress on the contingent issue," Zelenskyy stated.

However, he acknowledged that some countries remain skeptical and are unlikely to change their position. He suggested that a foreign troop presence in Ukraine could serve as the foundation for a joint European army capable of countering Russian aggression.

"I see this as the first platform for establishing such a force as a European Armed Forces that can respond to a Russian attack in the air, at sea, on land, and through AI-powered drones," he added.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine can create a defense platform with strong countries that are really interested in this. In his opinion, no country must be forced into participation.

The President clarified that a foreign contingent does not necessarily mean the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine but could involve air defense systems and weapon supplies as security guarantees.

"It is crucial not to lose the US in any form when it comes to the foreign contingent," Zelenskyy stressed.

Peacekeepers for Ukraine

Earlier, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would hold consultations with Europe on foreign troops on its territory. He noted that it was about an army that could defend against a Russian offensive. The UK, in particular, has expressed its readiness to send peacekeepers.

Meanwhile, Sweden also does not rule out sending its troops to Ukrainian territory to support sustainable peace. As noted by the country's Foreign Ministry, Sweden is ready to take such a step if the need arises.

At the same time, during the Munich Security Conference, the President of Ukraine noted that Ukraine is ready for a peacekeeping contingent without foreigners, but it needs US guarantees. The USA is needed as an ally, Zelenskyy emphasized.
