Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, August 18, according to the head of state's Telegram channel.

Zelenskyy held a lengthy and substantive conversation with Trump, initially one-on-one and later with the participation of European leaders.

The total duration of the talks exceeded one and a half hours, with about an hour spent with Trump.

"We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral Ukraine–America–Russia meeting. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the leader level, and the trilateral format is suitable for this," he stressed.

The president also highlighted the importance of involving European partners to reliably guarantee Ukraine’s security alongside the US.

He added that he continues to coordinate positions with all allies and thanked everyone who supports Ukraine.

Zelenskyy stated that details regarding the end of the war and killings will be discussed with Trump during the Washington meeting on Monday.

Trump and Putin meeting

On the evening of August 15, a meeting took place in Anchorage, Alaska, between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The main topic of the talks was Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

According to Trump, an agreement on a ceasefire was not reached during the meeting, and the further course of events now depends on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The American leader advised Zelenskyy to "make a deal" with Russia, noting that one possible outcome could be a rapid trilateral meeting of the leaders of Ukraine, the US, and Russia.

US Senator Lindsey Graham expressed his belief that such a meeting could end the war by Christmas. In the absence of negotiations, the US may increase pressure on Russia and on countries that continue to purchase its oil and gas.

As a result of the Alaska talks, Trump and Putin preliminarily agreed to a ceasefire in airspace.
