Zelenskyy: For the first time we see China's interest in ending war

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that it is important to engage China in exerting pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy was asked about the meeting between Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The president responded that China’s involvement is crucial in pressuring Putin to end the war.
"For the first time, it seems to me that we see China's interest. I think this is largely because all processes are accelerating now... That is why I believe this is an important meeting, and it may lead to further dialogue at another level," Zelenskyy stated.
According to him, Ukraine must encourage other countries to pressure Russia to stop the war. He emphasized the importance of the participation of countries from the so-called "Global South."
China’s position on the war
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, China has claimed to maintain a neutral position in the war. However, China continues economic and trade cooperation with Russia, including the supply of dual-use goods to Moscow.
China has advocated for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Beijing proposed its so-called "peace plan," but Ukrainian representatives criticized it.
After his inauguration, US President Donald Trump stated that he hoped for China’s help in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. Beijing responded that it would continue facilitating negotiations and maintaining communication with other parties.
