Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset. They discussed, among other things, the creation of a tribunal for Russia, according to the President's Telegram channel.

During the meeting, Zelenskyy and Berset discussed the necessity of establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression.

"It is important to hold Russian war criminals accountable. Another key issue is the release of prisoners and the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported by Russia," emphasized the President.

At the same time, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine's appreciation for the Council of Europe's role in creating the Damage Register as part of the international compensation mechanism.

"Ukraine is counting on the establishment of a Commission for handling claims and a Compensation Fund, as well as on the leadership of the Council of Europe in this process," added the President.

Last month, Polish Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar stated that the international community is approaching the establishment of a tribunal for Russia’s crimes of aggression against Ukraine.

European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders also emphasized earlier this year that a special tribunal for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's leadership is likely to be established by the end of 2024.

RBC-Ukraine previously reported that over 35 countries are working on the creation of a special tribunal to hold Russia accountable for its crimes in Ukraine.
