A draft law was proposed to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament - ed.) that could limit any manipulation of Ukrainian churches by Moscow. This draft law should add unity to Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy said that today, August 16, he met with members of the Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. After the conversation, he thanked them for supporting the course toward Ukraine's spiritual independence.

“A draft law was proposed to the Verkhovna Rada that can really guarantee that there will be no manipulation of the Ukrainian church from Moscow. This draft law should work and should add to Ukraine's unity, our real spiritual unity,” the President explained.

Ban on the Russian Orthodox Church

In October 2023, the Verkhovna Rada passed a draft law banning religious organizations associated with Russia in the first reading.

In March 2024, the Committee recommended that the Verkhovna Rada support the aforementioned draft law in the second reading, but this has not yet happened.

In late July, members of Parliament with placards blocked the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada with a demand to consider a bill banning religious organizations associated with Russia.
