Zelenskyy convenes meeting on Kursk region: Creation of military commandant offices discussed
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting regarding the situation in Russia's Kursk region. They discussed the possibility of creating military commandant offices, according to the head of the state on Facebook.
The meeting was attended by the Head of the President's Office Andrii Yermak, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, Minister for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk, and Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi also joined the meeting in an online format.
As the President noted, the meeting discussed key issues such as security, humanitarian assistance, and the creation of military commandant offices if necessary.
"Ukraine is defending itself and the lives of its people in the border communities, as well as taking active steps on Russian territory. Our forces strictly adhere to the requirements of international conventions and international humanitarian law," Zelenskyy emphasized.
Buffer zone in the Kursk region
As reported by Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian military forces have created a buffer (sanitary) zone in the Kursk region for self-defense purposes. This zone is intended to ensure the supply of food, medicine, and other necessary items for the civilian population.
The meeting also discussed the issue of access for representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations, and other international organizations to carry out humanitarian activities.
According to the Head of the Ministry for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine plans to open humanitarian corridors in the Kursk region for the evacuation of civilians both towards Russia and towards Ukraine.
Situation in the Kursk region
On August 6, reports emerged of a breach of the border from Ukraine's side in the Kursk region. Russian forces complained of fighting in the border areas, while the authorities claimed it was merely an incursion by a sabotage and reconnaissance group (DRG).
After nearly a week of combat, the Ukrainian command commented on the situation in the Kursk region. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that the Defense Forces of Ukraine control 74 populated areas in the Kursk region, covering an area of 40 square kilometers.
Today, August 14, Syrskyi stated that Ukrainian troops have completed the search and destruction of the enemy in the town of Sudzha. This locality is home to an important gas measuring station for the Russians, through which Russian gas is transited to Europe via Ukraine.
