Ukrainian troops managed to take several more settlements as part of their offensive in the Kursk region of Russia. Their main advance took place south of Sudzha over the past day. There was also a slight expansion of the combat zone in the Korenevsky district.

What is happening in the Kursk region and where fighting is taking place now - read in the report below.

The main offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces over the past day took place on the southern edge of the Sudzhansky district, according to the Russians. Ukrainian troops, according to the Russian military reporters, still control Sudzha.

The Russian opposition news outlet Medusa writes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have allegedly occupied most of the city and the village of Makhnovka. Russian media outlets also report Ukrainian attacks on the village of Martynovka, located to the northeast.

A Telegram channel close to the Russian defense ministry, Rybar, reported that Ukraine managed to take control of the villages of Spalnoe and Plekhovo, opening the way to the south of the Kursk region.

Information about Plekhovo first appeared yesterday afternoon, when a video of Ukrainian soldiers with armored vehicles moving in Plekhovo along Plan Street in the center of the village was posted on social media.

The Russian media outlet Agentstvo reports a slight expansion of the area of active hostilities in the Korenevsky district of the Kursk region, 15 km northeast of Korenevo village (according to Medusa, the Ukrainian army has reached the eastern outskirts of Korenevo).

The Russian ministry of defense announced that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had attacked the village of Obshchy Kolodez. The clashes are also confirmed by the data recorded from NASA satellites. Fighting also continues near the district center.

Ukrainian armored personnel carriers were also spotted in the village of Giri, a village in the Belovsky district of the Kursk region, located east of Sudzha.

The offensive continues not only to the south but also to the north of Sudzha. According to Meduza, Ukrainian troops have allegedly “failed to break through along the Sudzha-Kursk and Sudzha-Lgov roads”. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to advance toward Lgov to the west of the village of Kauchuk and the village of Alekseevsky.

According to Russian war reporters, Ukrainian forces have advanced in the fields north of the village of Snagost (south of Korenevo) and have taken control of Pogrebki.

The American Institute for the Study of War, based on statements and geolocated footage, believes that as of yesterday, Ukrainian forces were operating in or near approximately 41 settlements in the Kursk region. But there are many extremely small settlements and areas that ISW did not include in this count, analysts note.

“The discrepancies between Ukrainian official reports and observed ISW statements are not a refutation of Ukrainian official reports, but rather the result of the inherent limitations of the ISW open source methodology and the intent to use only publicly available information,” the experts explained.

Ukraine's incursion into Kursk region

The Ukrainian Armed Forces incursion in the Kursk region has been going on since August 6, 2024. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first confirmed the operation in the Russian border region only after almost a week of fighting. At that time, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported to him that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had already controlled 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory. Yesterday it became known that the Ukrainian military had advanced in some areas by 1 to 3 kilometers and now controlled 74 settlements in the region.

US President Joe Biden also reacted to the operation, saying that the attack posed a “real dilemma” for Russian president Vladimir Putin.

According to the Ukrainian side, the purpose of the operation in the Kursk region is not to seize foreign territories but to save the lives of Ukrainian people and protect the territory of Ukraine from Russian attacks.
