The decisions made by the US House of Representatives, whose speaker Mike Johnson was re-elected today, may play a decisive role in achieving lasting peace in Ukraine in the future, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Ukrainian president congratulated the 119th US Congress on the start of its first legislative session. He also congratulated Republican Mike Johnson on being elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“The bicameral and bipartisan support of the US Congress has enabled Ukraine to save thousands of lives and prevent many cities from falling into the hands of Russian forces,” Zelenskyy said.

He noted that, together with “all friends of freedom in Congress, we have demonstrated that the courage of the Ukrainian people, combined with American leadership, can effectively deter Russian aggression.”

Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of Congress remaining steadfast for global stability. He called on both parties and all members who truly value freedom to unite in defending human and democratic values.

The upcoming decisions of the House can play a crucial role in bringing about a real and lasting peace. The Ukrainian people are deeply grateful to Congress and the American people it represents for their continued support,” the Ukrainian president stated.

Zelenskyy also wished Johnson success in his "very important work.”

Johnson’s re-election as Speaker of the US House of Representatives

Earlier, it was reported that during today’s vote, Mike Johnson received support from only 216 members of the House of Representatives. It is important to note that unanimous backing from Republican Party members was essential for his candidacy.

Later, it was confirmed that the House of Representatives had officially elected Johnson as Speaker. In the subsequent vote, nearly all Republicans in the lower chamber of Congress cast their votes in his favor.

Additionally, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian Parliament - ed.), Ruslan Stefanchuk, reacted to Johnson’s re-election as Speaker of the US House of Representatives. He expressed confidence that successful collaboration would help bring the much-anticipated just peace to Ukraine.
