Mike Johnson re-elected as Speaker of US House of Representatives
The US House of Representatives supported Mike Johnson's candidacy for Speaker, The New York Times reports.
As The New York Times reports, Johnson secured 218 votes from congressmen to become Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the House, received 215 votes.
Johnson was able to reach this number of votes thanks to congressmen Ralph Norman and Keith Self, who decided to support his candidacy. During the first vote, they had backed other candidates.
How the voting took place
Johnson had almost full support from Republicans for his candidacy. He could afford to lose only one vote.
Initially, Johnson's candidacy was supported by only 216 members of the House of Representatives. Three Republicans cast their votes for other candidates.
It is worth noting that Mike Johnson was elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives on October 25, 2023. This came after the resignation of Republican Kevin McCarthy, who had held the position of Speaker since January 2023.
Johnson is one of the allies of elected President Donald Trump, who personally endorsed his candidacy.
