US President Donald Trump seeks a swift, sweeping peace agreement on the war in Ukraine, but a step-by-step approach remains crucial, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, according to The Guardian.

Trump "likes things in one big package"

According to Zelenskyy, Trump is interested in quickly concluding a comprehensive peace deal, as he favors large-scale solutions.

"He wants to agree on a peace deal all at once, because he likes things in one big package," Zelenskyy said, comparing this approach to the American leader's previous major legislative initiatives.

At the same time, Zelenskyy stressed that for Ukraine, the sequence of agreements is critical, with security guarantees and other key conditions needing to be defined first.

Elections possible after a truce

The president also said Ukraine could hold elections if a temporary ceasefire with Russia lasting two to three months is reached. He noted that elections would only be possible after active hostilities end and security guarantees for the country are secured.

US peace plan and talks

Last November, the United States proposed a 28-point peace plan for Ukraine that included significant concessions to Russia and was criticized by Kyiv and European partners. After a series of consultations involving Ukraine and EU countries, the document was revised and reduced to about 20 points, making it more acceptable to the Ukrainian side.

According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the plan on security guarantees is about 90% ready, but key contentious issues remain territories and the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Russia insists on control over Donbas and the plant, while Ukraine rejects such demands.

The latest round of talks between Ukraine, the United States and Russia took place on February 4-5 in Abu Dhabi, with the next meeting scheduled for February 17-18.
