Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov are already on their way to Europe. They are expected to deliver a report on the US’s readiness to modify certain details of the peace plan, according to the president’s evening video address.
The head of state noted that in recent days, Umerov and Hnatov held substantive discussions with representatives of US President Donald Trump.
"I expect from them detailed information on everything - everything that was said by American representatives in Moscow, on the nuances the Americans are ready to modify in negotiations with us and with Russians," Zelensky said.
He recalled that on Saturday, he held talks with Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff and the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and expressed his gratitude for their readiness to work 24/7.
“American representatives are aware of Ukraine’s core positions - the conversation was constructive, though not easy. We continue to work. Some things can only be discussed in person: Umerov and Hnatov will report back to me, and I will also speak with European leaders - we have meetings scheduled in London and Brussels,” the president concluded.
US peace plan
According to Axios, during Saturday’s talks with Witkoff and Kushner, Zelenskyy discussed two key issues - territory and security guarantees. Sources indicate that the first topic remains complex, but there is progress on the second.
Today, December 8, Zelenskyy will travel to London, where he is set to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The ongoing negotiations surrounding the peace plan will be a central topic of discussion.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg has reported that European leaders are trying to persuade Zelenskyy not to agree to a potential withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas without reliable security guarantees from the US.
