Zelenskyy answers if there is any threat to Ukraine if Trump wins US election
Both parties in the United States Congress support Ukraine. Kyiv will build relations with Washington regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, says President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, responding to a question from RBC-Ukraine at a press conference.
"First of all, I will answer that we cannot discuss the Trump presidency (Donald Trump, US presidential candidate from the Republican Party - ed.). Because, thank God, it is the people of the United States who elect the president of the United States. No other nations have any influence on this," Zelenskyy said.
He adds that Ukraine has support from both the Democratic and Republican parties. Kyiv has strong relations with the latter party, which was confirmed during the president's visit to Utah during the NATO summit.
"I met with a lot of Republican governors. They treat Ukraine, the people of Ukraine, our soldiers, me with great respect, and I see that we will develop these relations regardless of the outcome, the choice of the people of the United States in November. So, I do not see any major threats here," he added.
Zelenskyy says he understands the views of both presidential candidates on ending the war in Ukraine. If Trump becomes the next head of the White House, Ukraine will work with him.
"We are at war, we are emotional. And when there is uncertainty, and indeed the Republican Party is different, and there are hawks whose messages are more right-wing or more radical, I guess. But I want to tell you that the majority of the Republican Party supports Ukraine and the people of Ukraine," Zelenskyy stressed.
Turbulence of the electoral process
According to the president, Ukraine would not have received the US support package if it had not been for bipartisan support. Yet, the turbulence of the electoral process has had a great impact, as the delay in US aid has weakened the position of the Ukrainian forces on the battlefield, and Russia took the initiative.
"So, if we talk about the election, it has an impact on us... With all due respect to the United States, there will be no positive impact on us," Zelenskyyy said.
US election
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. The main candidates for the White House are Joe Biden from the Democratic Party and Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
Besides Donald Trump, former US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Nikki Haley participated in the race from the Republicans, but she withdrew from the race in early March.
The first round of debates between Trump and Biden took place recently in the United States. According to media reports, Biden was quiet during the debate, his voice was weak and unreasonable.
After the debate was over, Biden had doubts about running for president for a while. But his family still urged him not to leave the race.
