President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conversation with his Romanian counterpart Nicușor Dan. He also announced "important contacts tomorrow," the head of state reported.

"We coordinated our next joint steps in diplomacy and are preparing for important contacts tomorrow. I thanked Nicușor Dan and all EU leaders for today's statement of clear support for Ukraine's independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty," Zelenskyy said.

According to him, Ukraine and its allies agree that the first step toward a just peace should be a ceasefire.

"Now everything depends on the determination of President Trump and the unity of Europe. If Russia is not ready to stop the killings, then there must be sanctions on its economy that will force it to do so," the president emphasized.

He also thanked Romania for supporting the synchronized and joint movement of Ukraine and Moldova toward the EU.

"We look forward to welcoming Mr. President to Ukraine. Our teams are already working on the details," Zelenskyy added.

EU voices support for Ukraine ahead of Trump–Putin meeting

Today, EU leaders expressed their support for Ukraine ahead of the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Only Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not join the joint statement.

EU leaders addressed Trump on the eve of his meeting with the Russian president, stating that a fair and lasting peace that would bring stability and security must respect international law, including the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the prohibition of changing international borders by force.

EU leaders stated that Ukrainians must have the freedom to decide their future, and the path to peace cannot be determined without Ukraine.

European countries also assured that they will continue to provide political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine, as well as impose sanctions against Russia.
