Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump could sign an $800 billion agreement on Ukraine’s prosperity by the end of January, The Telegraph informs.
Western sources told the outlet that Zelenskyy and Trump will sign the agreement at the World Economic Forum, which will take place January 19–23 in Davos.
The Telegraph reports that Zelenskyy had planned to travel to the White House next week to finalize both the economic prosperity plan and the post-war security guarantees agreement.
However, allies from the Coalition of the Willing discouraged him from making the trip and suggested the World Economic Forum as a "more suitable alternative at which to meet Mr Trump."
Journalists’ sources said the plan is to use this meeting to finalize the economic agreement.
European officials involved in the peace talks urged Zelenskyy not to rush negotiations with the US president, believing that he currently supports their goal of ending the war on terms favorable to Kyiv.
What the prosperity plan involves
The prosperity plan is expected to mobilize around $800 billion over ten years and is aimed at rebuilding Ukraine and restarting its economy.
The document foresees the provision of loans and grants, as well as the launch of investment projects involving private companies, through which the necessary funds are expected to be raised.
Kyiv expects that US participation in post-war reconstruction — particularly in projects potentially of interest to Donald Trump — will increase Washington’s willingness to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees.
The foundation of the agreement is the mineral resources deal concluded last year, which gave American investors access to future extraction projects in Ukraine.
Prosperity plan
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had discussed a plan for Ukraine’s recovery with US President Donald Trump.
The plan envisions the creation of jobs in Ukraine, allowing European and US companies to start business in the country on special terms, among other measures.
