Ukraine's negotiation process for joining the European Union will not be easy, but historically, Kyiv has made a clear determination, as stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"We have the decision of the European Council, for the sake of which we worked the whole year – the decision to open negotiations on membership. In the coming days, we will officially launch with the European Commission the process of assessing Ukrainian legislation for compliance with EU legislation - the screening process," he said.

Zelenskyy added that they are also preparing for work on the negotiation framework for Ukraine - expecting it in spring.

"The negotiation process will not be easy, but the main thing is that historically we have made a clear determination: Ukraine will always be part of our common European home. And I thank everyone who helps bring the necessary European decisions closer - everyone who joined: politicians, public leaders, and people from different countries who believe in us, in Ukraine, and in Europe equally," he emphasized.

Decision of the European Council on Ukraine

On December 14, during the summit, the leaders of the European Union countries approved the opening of negotiations for Ukraine's accession to the bloc. This happened against the backdrop of concerns that Hungary might block the decision by vetoing it.

The EU leaders' negotiations lasted for over three hours, and the start of the summit was postponed due to Budapest's position. However, at the time of the vote, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán left the room, so the decision was unanimously adopted.
