Chinese leader Xi Jinping once again told fellow Communist Party members that he would bring Taiwan back to achieve the "complete reunification of the motherland," according to France 24.
Xi vows to bring Taiwan back
In a speech marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1, Xi Jinping once again addressed the issue of Taiwan.
"Resolving the Taiwan question and realising the complete unification of the motherland is an unswerving historical mission of our party and the shared aspiration of all Chinese people," he said.
The Chinese leader also called for resisting interference by external forces, though he did not name any specific countries.
What else Xi promised
According to Xi, fighting corruption within the ruling Communist Party remains a top priority amid recent scandals involving China's military leadership.
Over the past three years:
- Two defense ministers have been removed from office,
- The membership of the Central Military Commission, China's highest military body, has been reduced.
Speaking to political and military leaders and CPC members, Xi also pledged to strengthen and modernize the armed forces and vowed to "uphold the party’s absolute leadership" over the military.
"We must advance the modernisation of national defence and the armed forces," he said.
Analysts, meanwhile, have questioned the Chinese military’s ability to conduct effective combat operations following Xi’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign.
On June 27, Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on an official visit for the first time since 2019, as Beijing seeks to restore its influence over the North Korean regime.
Earlier, the Chinese leader sharply criticized Sanae Takaichi over her push to rearm Japan. The remarks were made during a summit with Donald Trump in Beijing.
On May 20, Xi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing. The two discussed bilateral partnership and the war in Iran.
