Xi Jinping hopes Japan to properly handle history and Taiwan issues
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Japan's new Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, for the first time at the APEC summit in Peru. During the meeting, the Chinese leader addressed the issue of Taiwan, according to Reuters.
Reuters notes Xi Jinping told the Japanese Prime Minister that China hoped that Japan would properly handle important issues such as history and Taiwan.
Additionally, the Chinese leader urged the two Asian neighbors to protect the global free trade system, as well as stable and unobstructed production and supply chains. These statements were made during their meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru.
Meanwhile, Ishiba told Xi that he wanted to build constructive and stable relations but asked him to lift the ban on imports of Japanese seafood and strengthen security measures for Japanese citizens in China following recent fatal knife attacks. He also expressed concerns about China's maritime activities.
According to a Japanese report on the meeting, the Japanese Prime Minister also urged Xi to release Japanese citizens detained in China.
Reuters reports that in recent months, Chinese and Japanese officials have made steps to restore several consultative talks, signaling a potential resolution of tense relations.
In recent years, China and Japan have disagreed on several issues, including territorial claims, trade tensions, and Beijing’s anger over Tokyo’s decision to release treated water from the Fukushima nuclear disaster site into the ocean, which led to a ban on seafood imports.
