Biden to discuss war in Ukraine and North Korean troops in Russia with Xi Jinping - White House
US President Joe Biden will discuss a range of issues with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a meeting on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Peru on November 16. Among the topics will be Beijing’s support for Moscow in the war against Ukraine, as well as the deployment of North Korean military personnel in Russia, reports the White House.
According to a representative from the US president's office, the upcoming APEC Summit, scheduled for the day after tomorrow in Lima, will feature a meeting between the leaders of the US and China.
The White House noted that this will be the third in-person meeting between the two heads of state since Biden took office. They previously met in Bali in 2022 on the sidelines of the G20 summit and in Woodsides in 2023, also on the sidelines of APEC.
When discussing expectations for the conversation with Xi Jinping, Biden's team highlighted that the president intends to use this meeting to address areas of disagreement and how to handle those differences in the future.
"I expect the President will express deep concern over the PRC’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the deployment of over 10,000 DPRK troops to Russia, where they have begun engaging in combat operations with Russian forces," the White House stated.
What other topics will Biden discuss with Xi Jinping
The US president's administration also added that they are increasingly concerned about the consequences of this deployment for long-term stability both in Europe and in the Indo-Pacific region.
In addition, Biden’s administration informed that he intends to discuss the following topics during his meeting with the Chinese leader:
- the unacceptability of cyberattacks on critical US infrastructure and other vital networks;
- the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and expressing concern over the increased military activity by China around Taiwan;
- concerns over China’s actions in the South China Sea, including the Chinese Coast Guard's actions against lawful maritime operations of other claimant countries in the region;
- emphasizing concern about China’s unfair trade policies and non-market economic practices, which have created unequal conditions for American workers over time;
- reaffirming the importance of maintaining communication between US and Chinese military forces at all times, especially during periods of heightened tension;
- strengthening joint law enforcement actions to combat drug trafficking;
- discussing issues related to artificial intelligence, among others.
