Russia’s war against Ukraine will not be among the topics discussed at talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump, and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, states German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Steinmeier said Beijing was not interested in holding a trilateral meeting with Washington and Moscow to discuss the war in Ukraine.
According to him, he discussed the possibility of such a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during talks in Beijing.
Xi reportedly said that his meeting with Trump and Putin would most likely take place at the upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen. However, the issue of Ukraine will not be on the agenda.
"He believes there are currently no signs of preparations for a summit on Ukraine involving the United States, Russia and China. ... He made it clear that this is a European conflict and that Europeans must also be at the negotiating table," Steinmeier said, recounting his conversation with Xi.
Steinmeier also drew attention to the Chinese leader's reaction. When he suggested discussing the possibility of holding a summit on Ukraine, Xi appeared surprised.
Steinmeier met with Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday. Following the talks, the German president returned to Berlin.
Just a day earlier, China had publicly called on Ukraine and Russia to make "mutual concessions" in the interests of peace.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently assessed the risk of Trump, Xi and Putin holding talks behind Kyiv's back.
