Will France provide Ukraine with nuclear umbrella: Macron's comments
France has its own position on nuclear deterrence for aggressor countries and it has not changed, states French President Emmanuel Macron.
"I think it is Russia that has been threatening with the nuclear stick from the very beginning. France has its own position on nuclear deterrence and it has not changed. This war started 10 years ago. These are new conditions, a new context. We see that we have to provide additional guarantees to Ukraine so that Ukraine has a clear calendar of military assistance and goes to the point where negotiations become possible. But the territorial integrity of Ukraine will be a fundamental value," the president emphasized.
Deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out the possibility that NATO might send troops to help Ukraine. However, there was no consensus at the time.
Later, Macron clarified that French troops could be sent to Ukraine if Russian troops attacked Kyiv or Odesa again.
A number of NATO countries opposed this idea, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland, Spain, and Italy. At the same time, some countries are ready to consider such a possibility, including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas supported Macron's idea and said that the readiness to send troops to Ukraine is a signal to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
