The release of declassified UFO archives and new Hollywood films have once again fueled belief in extraterrestrials, however the laws of physics suggest the opposite.

Although around one-third of the world’s population believes in visits from extraterrestrial civilizations, there are three fundamental scientific reasons why aliens cannot travel to our planet, according to The Conversation.

The incredible scale of the universe and the time trap

The first obstacle to any interstellar travel is the enormous distance. The closest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, is about 40 trillion kilometers away, which equals 4.3 light-years.

The fastest modern spacecraft built by humanity would take approximately 6,650 years to reach it.

Even if we assume that hypothetical aliens possess technology allowing travel at speeds close to the speed of light, they would face the effect of time dilation (Einstein’s relativistic time dilation).

For the passengers of such a ship, the journey would feel short, but on their home planet, centuries or even millennia would pass. Upon returning, the alien travelers would find an entirely different world.

Massive energy costs and the deadly nature of space

The second reason involves physical limitations on accelerating mass and the aggressive interstellar environment.

As an object’s speed increases, so does its relativistic mass, requiring ever greater amounts of energy to continue accelerating. Reaching the speed of light would require infinite energy, which is impossible.

Scientists emphasize that space is not empty. It contains scattered hydrogen atoms, which at near-light speeds become intense radiation. This radiation would instantly destroy instruments, crew, and melt the hull of any spacecraft.

Hypothetical warp drive concepts (Alcubierre metric) theoretically allow such travel, but they require energy levels far beyond what known physics can provide.

Moreover, a highly advanced civilization could produce any resources on its own planet, which, according to researchers, removes the motivation for such extremely energy-intensive journeys.

Toxic Earth biosphere for outsiders

The third factor lies in the uniqueness of Earth’s atmosphere. Life on Earth evolved together with the planet itself. About 2.4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria enriched the nitrogen atmosphere with oxygen.

For humans, oxygen is essential for life, but chemically, it is a highly reactive and corrosive gas.

For organisms that evolved under different conditions, our air could be a deadly poison. Moreover, UFO reports never describe aliens wearing protective suits.

To date, astronomers have discovered more than 6,200 exoplanets in thousands of star systems, but none of them resemble Earth.

Scientists continue searching for radio signals through SETI and Breakthrough Listen projects, but in 60 years of observations, no signs of extraterrestrial intelligence have been detected.
