In March 2026, the FBI warned US law enforcement agencies of an increased threat from Iran to targets within the country. At the same time, the White House downplayed the risk of an attack, according to Reuters.

In a report dated March 20, the FBI and other federal intelligence agencies warned that the Iranian government posed a persistent threat to US military and government personnel, buildings, Jewish and Israeli institutions, as well as Iranian dissidents in the United States.

Despite these warnings, the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center have not identified any large-scale threats to the American public.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump has publicly downplayed the likelihood of Iranian attacks on US soil. For example, when asked on March 11 whether he was concerned about the possibility of an Iranian attack on the US, Trump replied, "No, I’m not."

Attacks on Americans

The report also notes that Iran has attempted to kidnap and kill Americans in recent years. Although firearms were used in most cases in the US, other methods included "stabbings, vehicle rammings, bombings, poisoning, strangling, suffocation, and arson".

Tehran prefers to use agents who have a valid legal status in the U.S. or access to the country.

The report indicates that in the past, the Iranian government monitored social media, live streams, and mapping apps to select targets and assess security measures.

US-Iran ceasefire

Just hours before the US ultimatum expired last night, Trump announced that he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to media reports, the first direct talks between the US and Iran since the start of the war are scheduled for Friday, April 10, in the Pakistani capital. The US delegation will likely be led by US Vice President JD Vance.
