Pope Francis has died at the age of 88 due to a stroke. Following the stroke, the pontiff fell into a coma, Vatican News reports.

The official medical conclusion regarding the cause of the pontiff's death was announced by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State. It was confirmed using electrocardiographic thanatography — a specialized ECG recording used to prove that the heart has indeed completely stopped and shows no signs of life.

According to him, the stroke was followed by a coma and an irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse — a condition in which the heart and blood vessels cease functioning entirely and cannot be restored.

"I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above," he emphasized.
