US President Donald Trump has announced that he has withdrawn an invitation previously sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join the Board of Peace. The reason for the decision has not been disclosed.
"Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining," Trump wrote.
Relations between Trump and Carney have reportedly become strained amid trade disputes. Last year, Trump repeatedly threatened to make Canada the 51st US state and, at a recent forum in Davos, criticized the country, saying that Canada exists thanks to the United States.
What is known about the Board of Peace
On January 22, US President Donald Trump held a ceremony to establish the Board of Peace, attended by representatives of fewer than 20 countries. None of Washington's major Western allies were among them.
Notably, the total number of participants in Trump's Peace Board turned out to be lower than the previously announced figure of around 35 members mentioned by the US administration. It was also stated that temporary membership in the Peace Council lasts for three years and is free of charge. Countries seeking permanent membership must pay a $1 billion fee.
It is known that Trump also invited Ukraine to join the Board. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian diplomats are currently reviewing the invitation. However, the head of state noted that it is difficult to imagine Ukraine's participation in the Board alongside Russia and Belarus.
