Foreign nationals from 75 countries are serving in units of Ukraine’s Ground Forces. They take part in defending Ukraine against Russian aggression, Kostiantyn Milevskyi, Deputy Head of the Department for Coordination of Military Service of Foreigners in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated in an interview with Donbas Realii.

He noted that around 600 citizens of other countries sign contracts with Ground Forces units each month.

"It’s a bit colder now. People from warmer countries are less likely to travel. We can subtract up to 50 people from those 600. When it gets warmer, there will be a little more. But we are talking about an average figure," Milevskyi said.

According to him, the total number of foreign nationals who have signed contracts with Ground Forces units at various times exceeds 10,000.

Milevskyi emphasized that Ukraine accepts only as many volunteers as it can "pay attention" to. This includes:

  • combat coordination and training;

  • weapons supply;

  • uniforms and equipment.

"Of course, we could increase the number to a conditional 1,000, 1,500, or even 10,000, but if there is no one to work with these people, there will be no result," he said.

Foreign nationals are also fighting on Ukraine’s side within units of the Defense Intelligence and the National Guard. In the Defense Forces, they have the same rights and obligations as Ukrainian citizens. However, the key difference is that foreign citizens may terminate their contract at their own request after serving six months.

Foreigners in the Ground Forces

Earlier, Ukraine’s Ground Forces noted that foreign volunteers are taking part in combat operations in the most intense sections of the front, strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s defense.

The Ground Forces integrate the combat experience of foreign service members into units according to their professional training and specialization.
