The Vatican is increasing its focus on international efforts to end the war against Ukraine, emphasizing the need for European countries to play an active role in creating a sustainable peace solution, according to a Vatican News report.

Vatican’s stance on Europe’s involvement

Pope Leo XIV stated that Europe must become a full participant in developing a possible peace plan that would help find ways to end the war.

The Vatican News article notes that during his conversation with journalists, he reiterated the Holy See’s consistent calls for a ceasefire, for dialogue, not for war.

Contrasting US and European approaches

According to the Pope, current proposals from Washington show a desire to push forward its own settlement plan, which, from the outset, does not envisage Europe’s participation.

He noted that European input has already influenced revisions: “But Europe’s presence is important, and that first proposal was also modified because of what Europe was saying.”

Italy’s role in future negotiations

Separately, the Pope highlighted Italy, emphasizing its potential in upcoming diplomatic initiatives.

He stressed that culturally and historically, Italy can act as a mediator in the conflict between the various parties: Ukraine, Russia, and the US, adding that the Holy See is ready to support such mediation efforts.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed support for Ukraine amid Russia’s large-scale attacks on its energy infrastructure and has called for prayers for a just and lasting peace for a people facing severe trials.

Additionally, during a meeting with Hollywood actors at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV urged filmmakers to resist the influence of algorithms and to support local cinemas, which are rapidly losing audiences and falling into decline.
