US Vice President JD Vance said that after hours of negotiations, Iran still has not committed to abandoning the development of nuclear weapons, according to CNN.
When a reporter asked which conditions Iran had rejected, Vance stressed that Washington needs to see a firm commitment that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons or the tools that would allow it to quickly develop them.
"The question is, ‘Do we see a fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon not just now, not just two years from now but for the long term?’ We haven’t seen that yet, we hope we will," Vance added.
US and Iran fail to reach agreement on ending war
As a reminder, a few hours earlier J.D. Vance said that after 21 hours of negotiations, the US and Iran still had not been able to reach a peace agreement. As a result, the American delegation is returning to Washington without a final document.
It should be noted that a day before the talks, US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would be opened regardless of whether Iran agreed to cooperate, and that the key issue would be the nuclear question. In particular, he said the deal would be successful if Tehran committed not to possess nuclear weapons.
At the same time, a day earlier Trump said he did not care whether there would be a deal or not. According to him, the US is winning either way.
