US Vice President does not rule out US troop deployment to Ukraine, sets condition

US Vice President JD Vance stated that the United States is ready to increase sanctions pressure on Russia and did not rule out sending American troops to Ukraine. This could happen if Russian leader Vladimir Putin refuses to agree to a deal for a "just" peace, The Wall Street Journal reports.
As Vance explained, the option of deploying US troops to Ukraine is possible if Moscow is unable to "negotiate in good faith," meaning it must agree in a spirit of goodwill to the terms that will be "on the table."
In an interview with WSJ, the US Vice President emphasized that Ukraine must have "sovereign independence." American high-ranking official also allowed for military action if the Kremlin leader does not agree to a peace agreement with Ukraine that "guarantees Kyiv's long-term independence."
Western media note that Vance’s statements contradict the remarks made by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, when he said that the United States would not send troops to Ukraine.
In addition, in his conversation with WSJ journalists, the US Vice President reminded of the economic instruments of influence available.
On January 22, US President Donald Trump stated that he would consider new sanctions against Russia if Russian President Putin refused to negotiate an end to the war against Ukraine.
On February 7, US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg said that Trump is ready to double sanctions against Russia to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
Today, February 14, on the sidelines of the security summit in Munich, a meeting is scheduled to take place between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US Vice President JD Vance. As Western media previously reported, negotiations with the Ukrainian side in Munich will be held on the sidelines.
