US to suspend import tariffs on Canadian goods for 30 days - Canada`s PM
The United States will suspend tariffs on goods from Canada for at least 30 days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reports on the social media platform X.
"I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan - reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyll," Trudeau wrote.
Prime Minister stated that nearly 10,000 frontline personnel will work on securing the border.
In addition, Trudeau promised that Canada would take on a number of commitments, including appointing a Fentanyl Czar(a high-ranking official), adding cartels to the terrorist list, ensuring 24/7 border surveillance, and laumching a Canada - US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.
"I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million. Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together," Trudeau concluded.
Later, Trump confirmed his decision to suspend tariffs for 30 days on his social media platform, Truth Social. He stated that the pause is necessary to understand "whether or not a final economic deal with Canada can be structured."
On Sunday evening, US President Donald Trump announced upcoming phone calls with the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico, which took place on Monday. The talks were held just a day before the tariffs were set to take effect.
The situation with Mexico is similar to the Canadian case. After a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump decided to immediately suspend the imposition of 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico for 30 days as well. Sheinbaum agreed to send 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the border to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the US.
