Trump agrees to suspend 25% tariff on goods from Mexico
The United States is immediately suspending the imposition of a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico. This decision was made by US President Donald Trump following a conversation with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, CNN informs.
"I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States," Trump said.
According to him, the goal of deploying Mexican soldiers is to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the US.
"We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico," the US president noted.
He added that he looks forward to the opportunity to participate in such negotiations alongside the President of Mexico to reach an agreement between the two countries.
Tariffs on goods from Mexico
Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
The White House emphasized that these tariffs would remain in place "until the crisis subsides."
The tariffs were set to take effect on February 4.
