US President Donald Trump told reporters that he plans to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, February 3. The conversation will take place less than a day before US tariffs against the country come into effect, reports CNN.

"I’m speaking with Prime Minister Trudeau tomorrow morning, and I’m also speaking with Mexico tomorrow morning. And I don’t expect anything very dramatic. We put tariffs on. They owe us a lot of money, and I’m sure they’re going to pay," Trump told reporters on Sunday.

Trudeau himself said the day before that he had been trying to reach Trump since the inauguration, but his calls went unanswered.

In addition to his statements about the upcoming conversations, Trump once again threatened to impose additional tariffs on the European Union, accusing the bloc of really crossing all boundaries.

"They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products. They take almost nothing, and we take everything from them, millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm products," Trump said.

However, CNN notes that Trump's claims about the EU not purchasing American agricultural products and cars are false. Specifically, the US government reports that in the 2023 fiscal year, the EU purchased $12.3 billion worth of American agricultural products, making it the fourth-largest export market for US agricultural and related products. Meanwhile, according to a report by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association published in December 2023, the EU is the second-largest market for the export of American cars.

Trump's tariffs

Earlier, Trump imposed tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China, set to take effect on February 4. In response, Canada introduced reciprocal measures, releasing a list of US goods that will be subject to tariffs. China, on the other hand, plans to challenge the US president's decision, warning that it will respond to Washington with countermeasures.

Amid the tariff imposition, Canada and Mexico have decided to strengthen their relations.
