US President Donald Trump said that Washington has revoked the certification of all Canadian aircraft. He warned that tariffs could be imposed unless Ottawa revises its refusal to certify US-made Gulfstream business jets, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social.
He said that because Canada has "wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly" refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 jets, which he described as one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made, the United States is taking retaliatory measures, Donald Trump wrote, referring to aircraft produced by Gulfstream Aerospace.
"We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified, as it should have been many years ago," Trump stated.
The US leader added that Canada is effectively banning the sale of Gulfstream products in the country through the certification process. If the situation is not resolved, tariffs will be imposed on Canadian aircraft, Donald Trump said.
"If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America," Trump concluded.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that it remains unclear how serious a threat Trump’s statement poses to Canadian aircraft already in service with US airlines.
In particular, Bombardier’s CRJ series regional jets are widely used by American carriers. According to American Airlines Group, its regional fleet included about 200 CRJ aircraft in 2025. In addition, regional partners of Delta Air Lines were operating more than 150 CRJ jets by the end of 2024.
Bloomberg noted that Trump’s move marks the latest step in an escalation of trade tensions with one of the United States’ largest trading partners. This follows, among other things, his recent threat to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if the country were to conclude a trade deal with China.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney later said that Ottawa has no intention of signing a free trade agreement with China.
In addition to trade ties with Beijing, Trump has also criticized Canada over its stance on defense initiatives in the Arctic region.
