Trump's deadline
US President Donald Trump had previously announced plans to impose secondary tariffs and secondary sanctions against Russia. He promised to implement these measures if Russia did not reach a ceasefire with Ukraine by August 8.
Today, August 6, US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow. He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main topic of the talks was Russia's war against Ukraine.
Neither the Russian nor the American side has yet disclosed details of the negotiations. The president's aide, Yuri Ushakov, only stated that there was an "exchange of signals" during the meeting.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, responding to a question about whether Trump plans to impose sanctions on Russia, said that "maybe positive, maybe not" news will be announced soon.
